Steps to line spacing in Word
- Option 1: Quick Preset Spacing via the Design Tab
- Step 1: Click on the
Design tab on the ribbon.
- Step 2: Click on the
Paragraph Spacing button in the Document Formatting group.
- Step 3: Hover over the available presets (e.g., Compact, Relaxed, Double) to preview the effect, then click to choose the spacing you want.
- Option 2: Custom Paragraph Spacing via the Paragraph Dialog Box
- Step 1: Go to the
Home tab, then click the small arrow in the bottom-right corner of the Paragraph group.
- Step 2: In the Paragraph dialog box, click the
Indents and Spacing tab if it's not already selected.
- Step 3: Under Line Spacing, choose an option from the dropdown (e.g., Single, 1.5 lines, Double) or select Multiple to enter a custom value.
- Step 4: You can also adjust Before and After spacing to control the space between paragraphs.
- Step 5: At the bottom, choose whether to apply the changes to this document only or to new documents based on this template.
- Step 6: Click
OK to apply the changes.
- Option 3: Directly from the Ribbon
- Step 1: Click on the
Home tab.
- Step 2: Highlight the paragraph(s) you want to change.
- Step 3: Click on the
Line and Paragraph Spacing icon in the Paragraph group.
- Step 4: Choose a preset or click
Line Spacing Options for more advanced settings.
- Step 5: In the dialog box, adjust the settings as needed, then click
OK.
- Option 4: Modify the Normal Style for Global Changes
- Step 1: In the Styles group on the
Home tab, right-click on Normal and select Modify.
- Step 2: In the Modify Style window, adjust the line spacing using the formatting toolbar.
- Step 3: For more control, click
Format, then choose Paragraph.
- Step 4: In the Paragraph dialog box, adjust line and paragraph spacing, and review the live preview.
- Step 5: Click
OK to close the dialog, then OK again to apply the style changes.
Tip: Modifying the Normal style is a great way to apply consistent spacing across your entire document or set a default for all future documents.
