Steps to transpose Excel data
Option 1: Static approach – copy and paste as transpose
- Step 1: Select the range you want to transpose, then press Ctrl + C
- Step 2: Click the cell where you want to paste the result, right-click, and select Paste Special
- Step 3: Click Transpose, then click OK
Tip: This method creates a fixed copy, so changes in the original data won’t update the transposed version.
Option 2: Use the TRANSPOSE function to rotate data
- Step 1: Select the range where you want to display the transposed data and enter the formula =TRANSPOSE(
- Step 2: Select the range you want to transpose, then close the parenthesis
- Step 3: Press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to apply the array formula
Tip: This method keeps the transposed data linked to the original — updates in the source will reflect automatically.
Option 3: Use a simple formula trick to transpose
- Step 1: Enter one value in the result column and add a prefix before it
Example: lgA3
- Step 2: Highlight the cell with lgA3 and drag it to fill the rest of the area where you want the transposed values
- Step 3: Press Ctrl + H. In Find what, type lg; in Replace with, type =, then click Replace All
Tip: This trick is useful when quickly converting references into formulas without manually typing each one.
